Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong on Saturday, Sept. 27, warned that corruption remains the gravest injustice to Filipinos as it threatens the nation’s future and deprives children of education.
In a statement, the mayor reaffirmed his commitment to fight corruption, despite his decision to step down as special adviser to the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI).
"I refuse to allow these doubts to weaken the ICI and its mandate. That is why I have chosen to step aside, not to abandon the fight, but to protect the very integrity of the fight," Magalong said.
He urged Filipinos to remain vigilant and united against leaders and bureaucrats who plunder public funds.
The fight for accountability may be long and difficult, he said, but the resilience and courage of the Filipino spirit will prevail.
“Every peso stolen from the people is not just an act of theft. It is a school left unfinished, a hospital without medicine, a bridge that collapses, and a nation’s hopes betrayed,” added Magalong, who stressed that corruption robs the people not only of resources but also of their safety and future.
Change cannot happen overnight, he reminded the public, as he insisted that transparency, accountability, and good governance must define the nation’s future.
The mayor vowed his crusade for truth and justice will continue beyond institutional roles. He said this was the same resolve he applied in the Mamasapano clash, the Ninja Cops investigation, and his stand against traditional politics.
Magalong said doubts about the Commission’s independence prompted his decision to step down as its special adviser. With this, he emphasized that protecting the credibility of the ICI was paramount and that stepping aside did not mean abandoning the fight against corruption.
He formally resigned on Friday night after Malacañang ordered a review of his appointment following questions over a possible conflict of interest.
In his resignation letter, he said the Palace’s pronouncements on his designation undermined his role and mandate in the ICI. He noted that his primary responsibility to the people of Baguio remained unchanged.
Magalong concluded his message with a call for vigilance and solidarity against corruption, as he urged Filipinos to defend transparency, accountability, and good governance.
“The power of the people will always be stronger than the power of the few," he said.
