National University unleashed its fury and annihilated Far Eastern University, 89-64, for an emphatic start to its title-retention bid in the UAAP Season 88 women’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Saturday, Sept. 27.
The Lady Bulldogs began their two-peat run in a rousing fashion after dominating the Lady Tamaraws from the get-go, particularly in the second half where they utterly broke the game wide open to capture their first win this season.
Kristine Cayabyab spearheaded NU’s assault with 24 points from an 8-of-16 shooting. Marga Villanueva added 13 points, while Karl Ann Pingol and Angel Surada who combined for 23 points
The Season 85 Finals MVP also collected nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and one block to give Da Olan, the team's longtime deputy, a fitting head coaching debut for the Lady Bulldogs.
“First game namin syempre inaalay namin ito kay coach DA bilang first time nyang 'to na maging head coach namin,” said Cayabyab.
The bench mob also shone for the Lady Bulldogs as they posted 36 points while also flexing their might in the paint where they scored 38.
Shemaiah Abatayo and Yvette Villanueva topped FEU in scoring with 15 points apiece, while Amyah Espanol contributed 12 points in a losing cause.
Meanwhile, NU-Nazareth School and University of Santo Tomas remained unstoppable after maintaining their respective campaigns unblemished in the juniors basketball.
The Bullpups showcased their dominance in the first half before holding off the FEU-Diliman Baby Tamaraws, 78-66, with Moussa Diakite and Mark Arzola starring for the NUNS side.
In the other U16 game, CJ Tabbuga and Miguel Jubilado impressed as the Tiger Cubs bared their fangs and mauled De La Salle-Zobel Junior Archers, 91-70.
With NUNS and UST’s separate triumphs, they built a three-way tie on the top of the standings along with Adamson (2-0).
