CALASIAO, Pangasinan – This town has a problem that it hopes will go away soon and permanently – flooding.
Residents of Barangay Mancup once again experienced a “Waterworld” problem from Sept. 22 to 25.
Water rose quickly and residents were surprised.
No flooding of such magnitude has happened in the past 40 years or so here, they said.
“Nakakatakot, walang ulan ng dalawang araw pero nakakapagtaka na nagkaroon bigla ng baha at mabilis pa na tumaas ang level ng tubig,” a resident, Vanessa, said.
(Scary. It did not rain for two days but flood occurred and the water level went up so fast)
Water reached knee-high on the barangay road and much, much higher in interior areas – waist or neck-deep.
The culprit of the flooding? A damaged section of the dike in Barangays San Vicente and Banaoang.
Mayor Patrick Caramat, accompanied by the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management and Engineering Offices, visited the area and saw the extent of the damage.
Caramat said they will prepare a report to be sent to concerned agencies for urgent action.
The local chief executive hopes for action ASAP.
“Umaasa po tayo na agad maaksyunan ang problemang ito dahil maraming pamilya po dito sa Calasiao ang mapeperwisyo ng biglaang pagtaas ng tubig-baha," Caramat said.
(We are hoping for immediate action. Many people are suffering from the flood)
Waterworld is a movie starring Kevin Costner depicting an Earth where the polar ice caps have completely melted and the sea level has risen and covered nearly all of the land.
