PH to host 2025 World Math & Science Challenge

Young math and science wizards from various parts of the globe will strive for excellence as they compete in the 2025 World Mathematics and Science Challenge (WMSC), set to be held in the Philippines this November.
The Mathematics Trainers' Guild Philippines (MTG), which has been mentoring mathematically gifted students in the country since the mid-1990s, will hold the WMSC in Zamboanga City from Nov. 13 to 16.
According to MTG head Dr. Simon Chua, the competition aims to provide students a platform to explore diverse cultures, exchange innovative educational practices, and cultivate their natural talents through competitive experiences.
The contest also aims to invigorate learning by making it more engaging and intellectually stimulating.
"Ultimately, the goal is to foster a worldwide community of learners and educators dedicated to advancing math and science education," Chua stressed.
Each participating country can send up to three teams, one each for Middle Primary, Upper Primary and Junior High School divisions with four contestants per team.
Middle Primary entries "must be born on or after November 2015 while Upper Primary and Junior High School students must be born on or after November 2013 and November 2011, respectively."
Since the WMSC is focused on the middle educational level, participants "should not have won medals and other awards in advanced math contests."
Gold, silver and bronze medals, as well as merit certificates will be given to top scoring students with trophies going to team champions and their runners-up. "Best overall awards," on the other hand, will go to best teams in each division.
The individual and team competitions, as well as the Mini Math and Science Camp activities, are scheduled for Nov. 14.
English is the official language of both contests.
Aside from testing their skills and knowledge in academics, WMSC participants will also be immersed into the culture of Zamboanga City. Organizers will host a sightseeing tour of the city, located in the Zamboanga Peninsula.
The port city is a "melting pot of cultures where the Spanish-influenced Chavacano Creole is the most common language," Chua noted, adding that the city serves as a commercial hub for the Southern Philippines.
Meanwhile, MTG files show that the non-government group had conducted similar math and science contests in 2005 in Bohol, 2011 in Naga City, 2013 in Taguig City and Tagaytay City and 2017 in Davao City, among others.
