'Opong', 'habagat' to bring heavy rains on Sept. 26

Severe Tropical Storm Opong (international name: Bualoi) and the enhanced southwest monsoon (habagat) will bring heavy rains over Visayas and parts of Luzon and Mindanao on Friday, Sept. 26, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

Opong may bring intense to torrential rainfall (more than 200 millimeters) over Northern Samar, Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran, Sorsogon, Masbate, Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, and Romblon.

Heavy to intense rains (100 to 200 mm) are also expected in Quezon, Laguna, Batangas, Camarines Norte, Catanduanes, Camarines Sur, Albay, Marinduque, Aklan, Antique, Iloilo, Negros Occidental, Capiz, Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, Southern Leyte, and Dinagat Islands.

Meanwhile, moderate to heavy rains (50 to 100 mm) are likely in Aurora, Cavite, Metro Manila, Bataan, Rizal, Camiguin, and Surigao del Norte.

The southwest monsoon (habagat), enhanced by Opong, will also bring heavy to intense rains in Guimaras and moderate to heavy rains in Palawan, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor.

On Saturday, Sept. 27, heavy to intense rains may persist in Occidental Mindoro and Oriental Mindoro, while Batangas and Cavite may experience moderate to heavy rains.

PAGASA warned that rainfall may be higher in mountainous and elevated areas, and impacts in some locations could be worsened by significant antecedent rainfall.

Residents in areas highly susceptible to floods and rain-induced landslides were urged to take precautionary measures.
