BACOLOD CITY – Authorities are currently monitoring the situation in various areas in Negros Occidental, including this highly-urbanized city, as tropical cyclone ‘’Opong’’ initially displaced 1,298 individuals due to flooding on Friday, Sept. 26.
The city government initially reported 255 families or 1,257 individuals inside five evacuation centers. Affected residents were from Barangays 10, Banago, Cabug, Pahanocoy, and Taculing.
Twelve families or 41 individuals were evacuated in three barangays in Hinoba-an and Silay City. They include two families composed of six persons in Barangays Alim and Culipapa in Hinoba-an and 10 families or 35 residents in Barangay Rizal, Silay City.
Incidents monitored by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) include eroded road in Bonifacio extension, damaged spillway in Hacienda Jamandre, and bridge overflow in Biak na Bato Tamburong Bridge, all in La Castellana town due to continuous rain. These are now passable.
Flooding was reported in eight barangays in Talisay City, eight barangays in Bago City, one area in Isabela town, two in Silay City, four in Pontevedra town, two in Hinigaran town, and three in Moises Padilla.
A landslide occurred in Barangay San Francisco in Barangay Nabulao, Sipalay City, and only light vehicles can pass by the area.
A boat capsized in Barangay Daga, Cadiz City, but no other details have been provided as of posting time. A house was also partially damaged in Barangay Mambulac, Silay City.
Classes on all levels have been suspended and work in government offices in some local government units (LGUs) were also cancelled.
The PDRRMC is on red alert status.
