LEGAZPI CITY, Albay — A parish priest in Masbate City appealed for assistance after severe tropical storm "Opong” battered the province on Friday, Sept. 26, leaving widespread destruction in its wake.
Fr. Raymond Rhys Anave Garrucho of Santa Teresa de Calcutta Parish Rectory and Church in Barangay Bolo turned to Facebook to share the dire situation of his community and parishioners.
“I am speechless. Mas lalo na mga parokyano ko didi, aram ko sitwasyon ninda kay nagbalay-balay ako. Dili kakayanon san inda balay idto na bagyo. Please help us!” he wrote.
Quoting the Scripture, he added: “The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away, still, blessed be the name of the Lord!”
According to Garrucho, many families in the parish lost their homes or sustained severe damage as Opong swept through Masbate before dawn with powerful winds and torrential rain.
Masbate was among the hardest-hit areas as the typhoon lashed the Bicol region, displacing thousands of families and damaging homes, churches, and public infrastructure.
Authorities are still assessing the full extent of the damage and the immediate needs of affected communities.
Garrucho appealed to the public, humanitarian groups, and government agencies to extend help to residents in Bolo and other devastated villages.
As relief operations continue, the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) in Masbate reported that thousands of families have been affected by the typhoon.
Officials urged those who can help to coordinate with local parishes and the PDRRMO to ensure aid reaches the most vulnerable.
