People in storm-battered Calayan Island appeal for nat'l gov't assistance
People in Calayan, Cagayan have appealed for assistance from the national government as they rebuild from super typhoon ‘’Nando’’ (international name ‘’Ragasa’’).
Calayan Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) President Al Llopis said in an interview with the Cagayan Public Information Office that the island sustained major damage from the howler. Many houses, fishing boats, and crops were totally destroyed, Llopis said.
Llopis lamented that the island bears the brunt of tropical cyclones yearly but have yet to receive assistance from the national government.
The provincial government, he said, has provided assistance but it is not enough due to the magnitude of destruction, thus, the national government has to step in.
Foremost among what they need right away is food and restoration of power supply.
“Sana makita ng national government ang sitwasyon namin, sana mapansin niyo naman kami, dahil tao rin naman kami dito," Llopis said told Cagayan CPIO.
(We are hoping that the national government sees our plight. We are also human beings here)
