MGB warns of landslides, flooding from 'Opong' in Eastern Visayas
TACLOBAN CITY – The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) on Wednesday warned of a high possibility of landslides and flooding in 1,342 barangays in Eastern Visayas due to tropical storm ‘’Opong.’’
The MGB said 1,035 are highly susceptible to flooding and 307 have a high possibility of rain-induced landslides.
Ninety are in Northern Samar, 81 in Leyte, 65 in Samar, 30 in Eastern Samar, 29 in Biliran, and 12 in Southern Leyte.
Three-hundred thirty-two with high probability of flooding are in Samar, 239 in Eastern Samar, 233 in Northern Samar, 177 in Leyte, and 54 in Biliran.
“There are possible landslides and flooding. Please be alert and help monitor your areas for possible landslides, floods, or mudflows,” the MGB regional office here said.
Residents were asked to stay alert for any signs of increase or decrease in flood levels, and watch over areas near rivers, slopes, or drainage canals.
They were also asked to report any signs of soil movement, water rising fast, or muddy water.
Those who notice cracks in their walls or tilting of floors and posts in sloping areas were advised to report the situation to barangay officials.
The MGB issued the warning to help prepare vulnerable communities for impacts of the weather disturbance in the next days.

The MGB advised the Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Committees to coordinate with their City or Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils to plan for any emergency, including the identification of safe and suitable evacuation centers.
