A fisherman died while six others were missing when a fishing boat capsized off Santa Ana, Cagayan on Tuesday, Sept. 23, amid the onslaught of Super Typhoon “Nando”.
Fishing boat “Jobhenz” was carrying 13 fishermen while anchored at the coastal waters of Barangay San Vicente when it was knocked off by violent waves, heavy rains and strong winds.
A distress call was immediately issued, prompting personnel of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Station Santa Ana to conduct search and rescue (SAR) operations.
The first SAR operation resulted in the safe rescue of four fishermen who were brought to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Santa Ana town for medical care.
Additional SAR teams, including PCG Special Operation Group (SOG) divers and Coast Guard Medical Team (CGMED) personnel, were sent while a high-speed response boat (HSRB) and several rubber boats were dispatched to widen the search.
Two more fishermen were later rescued while a cadaver of their comrade was retrieved by the SAR teams.
“Six fishermen are still missing. Search and rescue efforts continue,” PCG spokesperson Captain Noemie Cayabyab said.
The PCG was also monitoring 48 vessels and 14 motorbancas taking shelter in ports, while sea travel in Northwestern Luzon and Northeastern Luzon remained suspended.
In an update, Office of Civil Defense (OCD) spokesperson Junie Castillo said the number of affected families has increased to 44,000, comprising 159,000 individuals from Ilocos (Region 1), Cagayan Valley (Region 2), Central Luzon (Region 3), Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Calabarzon (Region 4A), and Mimaropa (Region 4B).
Of those affected, around 7,500 families or 22,000 individuals were displaced and temporary sheltered in evacuation centers.
“Our relief food and non-food items have already been prepositioned so all the needs inside the evacuation centers are being met with the help of our local government units, as well as our regional and national agencies,” Castillo said.
A concrete wall also collapsed in Sta. Lucia, Ilocos Sur but no casualty has been reported so far.
