Reigning champion University of the Philippines aims to rebound from its opening-game stumble when it goes for a bounce back win against Adamson in the UAAP Season 88 men’s basketball tournament at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion in Manila Wednesday, Sept. 24.
Reeling from a disappointing 87-67 loss to University of Santo Tomas last weekend, the Fighting Maroons need to set aside the unpleasant start of their title defense bid as they look to recover when they tangle with the Soaring Falcons in their 4:30 p.m. showdown.
Opening the men’s basketball tiff is a 2 p.m. clash between the promising Ateneo and University of the East.
UP head coach Goldwin Monteverde couldn’t help but to air his frustrations after the State U suffered a 20-point beatdown against the Growling Tigers. But he is still looking on the brighter side of things and is hoping their setback would serve as a valuable lesson for the defending champs.
“This is not naman yung way na gusto namin mag-start ‘yong season. I guess playing as a team, we need to improve on that,” said Monteverde as he expects another hard test with Adamson, which came off a 60-58 loss to La Salle.
“Sometimes ‘yong mga gantong tough losses, it will really push us to work together and to work harder and try to improve more as a team,” the two-time UAAP champion mentor added.
The Fighting Maroons, who are playing without their key pieces from last year, struggled defensively as rookie Collins Akowe made a big statement in his debut game as a Tiger.
For UP, Noy Remogat, who had a quiet five-point outing, must improve his performance along with mainstays Jacob Bayla, Harold Alarcon, Reyland Torres, Gerry Abadiano, and Mark Belmonte to get back on the winning track.
In the first game, the Blue Eagles, who are coming from a 86-83 win over Far Eastern University, seek to continue their winning ways when they tussle with the Red Warriors.
Fronting the Tab Baldwin-mentored crew are Jared Bahay and Kymani Ladi, who both went clutch in their previous contest, as they anticipate a hungrier Precious Momowei-led UE which absorbed a 72-57 setback to National University.
"And if we want to be there slugging it out with the top teams at the end and not just showing up to be at the party, then we've got to learn and we've got to learn fast," said Baldwin.
Meanwhile in women’s basketball, Ateneo clashes with UE at 12 p.m. and UP against Adu at 7 p.m.
