In a historic moment for Viva Communications, Inc. and Milagro Korea, Aubrey Caraan and Daewon Lee released a collaborative single titled “Selfish Guy,” which evokes a heartfelt Korean drama and teleserye atmosphere.

Released on Sept. 5, the track was written and composed by Daewon Lee himself. During a special interview, he shared that he wrote the song based on his own experience. Rooted in his past relationship, it put him in a place where he had to decide whether to choose love or his career. Later on, he chose to pursue his career, making him a selfish guy for his decision to set aside his romantic feelings.

Daewon Lee is a multi-talented Korean performer with an impressive background as a singer, dancer, actor, and even a career in sports, where he competed as a mixed martial artist, holding an Angel’s Fighting Championship title with an outstanding undefeated 8-0 run.

A former member of the idol group OFFROAD, which spent a great deal of time in the Philippines six years ago before they disbanded, admitted that it made him miss the country a lot. Now, with an opportunity to go back, he considered it a miracle and didn’t hesitate to work on his upcoming projects.

Viva Communications Inc. and Milagro Korea recently signed a strategic partnership that aims to represent Filipino and Korean artists and create more avenues for artistic exchange both in the Philippines and South Korea. One of the major projects lined up is this collaboration song between Daewon Lee and Aubrey Caraan.

Meanwhile, Aubrey Caraan is a Filipina singer and actress known for her song “How You Feel,” which also served as an official soundtrack of the Viva One series Avenues of the Diamond, where Aubrey also stars as the lead female character, Samantha Vera, alongside Lance Carr, who plays Clyden Ramirez.

Aubrey has been in show business since she was 10 years old, joining amateur and television singing contests, which led to her discovery as a talented performer. When she signed with Viva, she landed multiple projects in both music and acting.

For quite some time, she explored her appropriate genre with her label’s support. Ranging from pop, when she debuted as a member of Pop Girls, to R&B, she later found that her music leans more toward power ballads. With her remarkable vocal range, she became the perfect collaborating artist for Daewon, who shares the same vocal register.

Daewon Lee and Aubrey Caraan both came from a pop group and pursued their solo careers after their groups disbanded. They also shared that this will be the first time they will have a female-and-male vocalist collaboration through “Selfish Guy.” Daewon narrated how he had been singing this song to himself for quite a long time, but somehow it felt incomplete. Only when he collaborated with Aubrey did he realize that the song became whole when she channeled the emotion he wished the song to convey to its listeners.

Giving them a chance to sing in both languages, Daewon and Aubrey released the song in Korean and Tagalog. Aubrey expressed her astonishment at Daewon’s pronunciation, considering that he had little time to practice the translated lyrics. “Nagulat ako, sobrang galing niya! Everything’s good, as in! Sinend ‘yung material namin na Tagalog, ilang days before the recording, alam na niya. As in alam na niya. (I was surprised, he's so good! Everything's good, as in! We sent our material in Tagalog, a few days before the recording, and he already knew, as in he already knew)," said Aubrey.

“What I really like about him in the recording studio is that he is very hands-on. Kunwari may narinig nga siya sakin na…kasi, ‘yun nga very strict sila pagdating sa techniques, i-ko-correct niya na ganito dapat, ganyan. (Pretend he heard something from me...because they're very strict when it comes to techniques, he'll correct me that it should be like this, like that.) Very hands-on siya ‘cause it’s his song, naiintindihan ko talaga. (He's very hands-on 'cause it's his song, I really understand)," she shared, adding that collaborating with Daewon and Milagro Korea is a new learning experience.

Sharing the same admiration for Aubrey, Daewon was surprised by how hardworking Aubrey is, especially during the recording. Considering that the song is a bit lengthy to finish perfectly in such a short time, it was supposed to be a two-day recording. However, Aubrey insisted on finishing it all the way on the first day.

Daewon shared that he was worried for Aubrey at that time since they finished quite late, but at the same time, he commended her unwavering focus on work. On the other hand, Aubrey said that she enjoyed the recording and considered her efforts all worth it after listening to the final mix.

Grateful and honored to have collaborated on this single, Daewon Lee hopes that people will accept this project with Aubrey Caraan wholeheartedly, as both of them poured their hearts into accurately conveying the artistic meaning of the song.
