TACLOBAN CITY - A police chief in Biliran province is facing homicide raps for allegedly shooting and killing a drinking buddy, Sunday in Barangay Balire, Tunga, Leyte.
The suspect was identified as Capt.
Alberto Parena, 53, of Barangay Abango, Barugo, Leyte.
The victim was identified as alias Jonar, 56, a farmer and resident of Barangay Parag-um, Carigara, Leyte.
The victim, reportedly intoxicated, suddenly pulled a short-bladed weapon called a “pisaw” from his waist and stabbed the suspect during a drinking session at the house of the suspect's aunt.
The suspect was able to escape and kept his distance. Fearing for his safety, he fired a warning shot at the victim.
However, the victim continued to attack him, prompting Parena to defend himself by shooting the victim once, hitting him in the neck.
The suspect rushed the victim to the hospital where he was declared dead.
Parena surrendered to authorities and turned over a caliber .9mm pistol which will be subjected to micro-etching and ballistic examination.
The crime scene was processed by Regional Forensics Unit 8 which recovered two fired cartridge cases.
Follow-up investigation is ongoing.
