TACLOBAN CITY – The Police Regional Office-8 reported a peaceful observance of the Trillion Peso March and the 53rd anniversary of the declaration of martial law in Eastern Visayas on Sunday, Sept. 21.
Police Brig. Gen. Jason Capoy said they documented 16 rallies with a crowd of approximately 4,550 participants.
The PRO-8 deployed over 4,300 personnel for the two events.
“This large-scale deployment aimed to ensure the safety and security of all participants, as well as the general public, during the Trillion Peso March and the 53rd anniversary of the declaration of martial law.”
“PRO-8 closely monitored the rallies to effectively manage crowd control, maintain peace and order, and prevent any untoward incidents throughout the region,” he added.
Tension ensued between police and delivery riders attempting to join the protest in Tacloban City.
Police Major Sheena Layog, Tacloban City Police Station 2 Chief asked for their permit. However, they failed to present one. Police were lauded for observing maximum tolerance despite the altercation.
Capoy praised PRO-8 personnel for their dedication and professionalism amid the challenges encountered in the rallies.
“Their commitment to peace and respect for citizens’ rights reflects true service. I also appreciate the public’s cooperation, which made a significant difference in the peaceful conduct of the Trillion Peso March and 53rd martial law anniversary,” he said.
In Matag-ob, Leyte, a run against corruption dubbed “Dagan Kontra Korapsyon Alang sa Himorasak nga Kaugmaon” was joined by local leaders and various sectors in the fourth district of Leyte.
Joan Capuyan from Barangay Bonoy was teary eyed as she recalled staying two nights in the evacuation center during the recent flooding in August.
“We suffered a lot because of corruption. Watching my son and daughter, I realized that they (corrupt officials) enjoy, but we suffer. Let us not forget that we have voices against corruption,” she said.
Matag-ob has been the center of controversy when part of a flood control project in Barangay Riverside was damaged during the flooding.
