Jared Bahay and Kymani Ladi gave Ateneo fans something to look forward to after showing nerves of steel in crunchtime to help the Blue Eagles escape the FEU Tamaraws in overtime, 86-83, in the UAAP Season 88 men's basketball tournament at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion
Bahay and Ladi embraced their respective roles and led the way for the promising Ateneo side, spoiling a 48-point combined output from the talented duo of Janrey Pasaol and Jorick Bautista while also ending Ateneo's four-game losing skid against FEU.
The 5-foot-9 versatile playmaker seemed to be answering the call of veteran mentor Tab Baldwin, who is giving his full trust to Bahay to steer the team this season.
“Being this early, coach Tab gave me the captaincy. I'm very honored to accept the captaincy that he gave me,” said Bahay, who uncorked back-to-back triples in the extended period to lead Ateneo’s come-from-behind triumph.
“Thoughts on that? I don't really know. I'm just ready for whatever it takes,” he added.
For Ladi, a battle-tested rookie who played for Merritt College at the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA), it was just him cherishing every moment in his one-year stint as a Blue Eagle.
“I love the atmosphere here. It's new, but it's also exciting for me because I've always wanted to play on a stage like this and now I got the opportunity, I'm taking it. It's great to play in this atmosphere,” said Ladi after dazzling in maiden UAAP game off 26 points, nine rebounds, three assists, and one block.
“The competition is great. It really gave me a test of what I can really do and what I can do for the team,” added Ladi, who sank a booming triple to seal the deal for Ateneo.
Though the Katipunan-based squad prevailed in its first assignment, coach Baldwin and Bahay are far from being satisfied.
“This game was won on talent and not on tactics and coaching ability and cohesiveness. So give credit to the players. They fought to the finish line and won the game,” said Baldwin. “But it's not the kind of performance that's going to be indicative of a team that will get to the playoffs and deserves to get to the playoffs.”
“I believe what coach Tab said, this game was won between talent, not tactics. This is not us and we still have a lot to show,” Bahay added.
Next for Bahay and Ladi are the University of the East Red Warriors on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the same venue.
