LANDSLIDE in Benguet triggered by 'Nando.'
BAGUIO CITY – Nine people were injured by landslides triggered by tropical cyclone ''Nando'' in Sitio Begis, Barangay Poblacion, Tuba, Benguet on Monday afternoon.
Several vehicles, including a fuel tanker, a commuter van, and a car, were destroyed.
Rescue teams evacuated victims while the Department of Public Works and Highways-Cordillera conducted clearing operations.
Marcos Highway, Kennon Road, Baguio-Nueva Vizcaya Road, and Nangalisan-Asin-San Pascual Road, main roads to Baguio City, were closed to traffic due to landslides.
Mayor Benjamin Magalong here conducted a thorough inspection in Camp 6, Kennon Road to check slope protection such as rock netting to ensure the safety of residents.
Many parts of this city experienced power interruption.
Motorists were advised to postpone their travel until Nando leaves the country.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development-Cordillera Administrative Region reported Monday that 662 families, or 1,959 individuals, have evacuated to safer areas Nando battered Northern Luzon.
In a report as of noon Monday, DSWD-CAR said that of the displaced, 470 families are in evacuation centers, while 192 are staying with relatives or friends.
Seven-hundred twenty-nine families across the region have been affected: 661 in Apayao, 28 in Abra, 23 in Benguet, nine in Ifugao, and nine in Mountain Province.
Maria Aplaten, regional director of the DSWD-CAR, said they recorded three totally and five partially damaged houses.
The agency has pre-positioned 81,175 family food packs, 19,186 non-food items, and 4,981 ready-to-eat packs across provinces, municipalities, and barangays.
A standby fund of P2.257 million is also available.
Social welfare officers are deployed to assist in relief distribution.
Meanwhile, the Police Regional Office-CAR (PRO-CAR) also activated full disaster response protocols, mobilizing 1,081 police officers.
Sevent-hundred forty-two joined Quick Reaction Teams to aid in rescue and evacuation, provide relief assistance, and maintain peace and order in affected communities.
The Benguet Electric Cooperative (BENECO) is on red alert status and prepared equipment and personnel to restore electricity in case of outages. (With a report from PNA)
