Thousands join anti-corruption protest at EDSA People Power Monument
Motorists were advised to avoid White Plains Drive in Quezon City, which has become impassable since Sunday afternoon, Sept. 21, as protesters filled the road during the mass demonstration calling for accountability over alleged irregularities in flood control projects at the EDSA People Power Monument.
As of 2:30 p.m., the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said both directions were no longer passable, with the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) estimating the crowd at around 5,000.
Situation Updates:
•2:00 p.m. – Around 4,000 protesters gathered at EDSA People Power.
•2:30 p.m. – Crowd grew to around 5,000.
•3:20 p.m. – Protesters increased to about 15,000, according to QCPD.
Several government officials reportedly joined the “Trillion Peso March” against corruption, including Senators Kiko Pangilinan and Bam Aquino, Mamamayang Liberal Rep. Leila de Lima, and Baguio City Mayor and Independent Commission for Infrastructures adviser Benjamin Magalong. Celebrities Julia Barretto, Vice Ganda, Anne Curtis, and Ion Perez were also in attendance.
Thousands of demonstrators had begun gathering as early as Sunday morning at Luneta Park in Manila and at the People Power Monument in Quezon City, coinciding with the commemoration of the declaration of Martial Law. They called for accountability amid the exposé on flood control projects.
Protesters carried Philippine flags and chanted, “Mga kurakot, ikulong na ‘yan (Jail the corrupt!).” Placards displayed messages demanding accountability and transparency, including “Ibalik n’yo ang pera ng taumbayan (Bring back the money of the people),” “Manindigan, Lumaban, Makialam (Take a stand, resist, and speak out!),” and “End corruption now!” among others.
The QCPD reminded participants to comply with Batas Pambansa Blg. 880, or the Public Assembly Act of 1985, by maintaining peace and order, respecting fellow demonstrators, and cooperating with law enforcers for a peaceful gathering.
Authorities also directed all personnel to exercise maximum tolerance and uphold human rights throughout the demonstrations.
