CEBU CITY–It wasn’t a world title but for “Sugar” Shane Gentallan, it felt like one.
Gentallan pulled off what could easily be his biggest win by far when he dominated Arvin John Sampaga to wrest the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) Asia Junior Flyweight belt in the main event of “Kumong Bol-anon 22” on Satuday night, Sept. 20, in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.
Gentallan outclassed Sampagan to ice a unanimous decision victory with all three judges coming up with identical scores of 97-93–all for the Boholano boxer.
“This is a big win for me. I fought a very tough opponent. He hits hard, that's why I was very careful with my attack,” Gentallan said.
Gentallan admitted he is in the process of building back his confidence after absorbing a stinging loss more than two years ago.
Capturing the regional IBF belt will help ease the process, he said.
“I am getting my confidence back,” said Gentallan.
Gentallan disclosed that he thought of quitting boxing when he lost to China’s DianXing Zhu right in front of his hometown crowd in Guindulman, Bohol in 2023.
The loss denied Gentallan from snatching the WBC Asian Silver Light Flyweight title.
Gentallan said the defeat was so painful that he isolated himself for several days.
“I didn’t go out of our house for a week. People were saying a lot of things and it hurt me. I thought of quitting boxing. I am a graduate of Customs Administration so there was another choice aside from boxing,” said Gentallan.
Upon the prodding of his manager, lawyer-sportsman Floriezyl Podot, the top honcho of PMI Bohol Boxing Promotions, Gentallan returned to the gym and regrouped.
Now, Gentallan’s road to redemption looks rosy as his win versus Sampagan was his sixth straight since stumbling against Zhu.
“I still have a lot to improve but I think I’m ready for bigger fights,” said Gentallan, who hiked his record to 13W-1L, 7KOs.
Podot, on the other hand, liked what he saw with Gentallan in the 10-round fight.
“He still needs to improve his power but his stamina was superb. Overall, I’m satisfied with his performance. He improved a lot,” Podot said.
A foreign opponent may be up next for Gentallan as Podot wants tougher tests for one of the prized wards of the PMI Bohol Boxing Stable.
“We will bring in a foreign opponent for his title-defense.That’s part of our system. Pitting our boxers against foreign opponents to really test them,” Podot said.
