BACOLOD CITY – Despite the rain, approximately 2,500 individuals turned out in this highly-urbanized city on Sunday, Sept. 21, to mark the 53rd anniversary of martial law.
Demonstrators expressed their frustrations over recent issues and broader concerns about governance in the country.
Clad in black and white, around 1,000 participants—including Church groups, former government officials, youth, and activists—gathered at South Capitol Road in Barangay 8 before marching to the Bacolod Public Plaza.
Protesters held placards condemning corruption and poor governance.
According to Police Lt. Col. Joem Malong, spokesperson for the Police Regional Office–Negros Island Region (PRO-NIR), the crowd at the public plaza peaked at around 2,500 people by Sunday afternoon.
Supporters of former President Rodrigo Duterte held a separate motorcade, rallying behind the call to “Bring Duterte Home.”
Around 80 individuals took part, utilizing 20 various four-wheel vehicles and 50 motorcycles.
A peace rally and motorcade were also held in Freedom Park, Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, involving about 200 participants.
Malong said that no protests have been monitored in Siquijor.
The PRO-NIR reported no significant incidents during the gatherings and continues to monitor and secure public events across the region.
Authorities assured the public of their commitment to maintaining peace and order and urged citizens to remain vigilant, cooperative, and respectful of one another’s rights.
