ILOILO CITY – The Roman Catholic and other Christian clergy in Western Visayas are in full force for the Trillion Peso March against corruption on Sunday, Sept. 21.
The clergy in Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Guimaras, and Iloilo are leading the multi-sectoral protests in their localities.
“As part of our proactive response both to the Pastoral Letter of Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines and the Circular Letter of Archbishop Midyphil Billones to the ‘floods of corruption,’ we invite everyone to the Trillion Peso March,” said the Archdiocese of Jaro, which oversees the Catholic clergy in Iloilo City, the 42 towns, and component city of Iloilo.
The protest in Iloilo City, the regional capital, is expected to have the biggest number of participants. Protesters will march from either the Jaro Cathedral and the city campus of UP Visayas to the Iloilo provincial capitol grounds, where there will be a program and concert.
In Aklan, the protest will be held at New Washington town instead of the provincial capital of Kalibo. New Washington is the hometown of late Jaime Cardinal Sin, who played a pivotal role in the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution.
In Antique, it will be at the Evelio B. Javier Freedom Park in the capital town of San Jose de Buenavista. The park is named after the slain governor, whose assassination ignited the 1986 EDSA People Power Revolution.
In Capiz, the protest will be held in the provincial capital of Roxas City.
Police in all these places are on full alert.
