Jayson Vayson is ready to seize a rare opportunity to become a unified world champion as he faces Puerto Rico’s Oscar Collazo for the World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Organization (WBO), and Ring Magazine minimumweight titles on Sunday, Sept. 21, at the Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Las Vegas.
Vayson, who dropped from the 112-pound flyweight division to meet the 105-lb minimumweight limit for his first-ever world title shot, has already completed half the battle by easily making weight at 104.4 lbs.
Collazo, the reigning champion, tipped the scales at 104.6 lbs and is looking to add the 27-year-old pride of Agusan del Norte to his growing list of Filipino victims in his 12-round title defenses.
Originally scheduled for a flyweight title eliminator, Vayson shifted plans and flew to the United States after being offered a surprise shot at Collazo’s belts. Despite being a heavy underdog, he isn’t backing down.
At stake for Vayson is not just personal glory, but the chance to join fellow Filipinos Pedro Taduran and Melvin Jerusalem as reigning champions in the minimumweight division. Taduran holds the International Boxing Federation belt, while Jerusalem owns the World Boxing council crown.
A win would mark the first time in Philippine boxing history that a single division is simultaneously ruled by three Filipino world champions.
But Collazo isn't a pushover, not with his perfect 12-0 record that included a stoppage against Jerusalem. More so, the Puerto Rican is also aiming to use the bout as a springboard to his plans of unifying all the belts in his division and become the undisputed champion.
Vayson, who packs a 14-1-1 record, is coming in with a mentality that is nothing to lose and everything to gain. And if he manages to pull it off, he would be the next big thing in PH boxing.
