The Department of Health (DOH) on Saturday, Sept. 20, reported that the country has logged a total of 5,430 leptospirosis cases nationwide since the onset of the rainy season in June.
In total, the DOH recorded 5,430 leptospirosis cases from June 8, a week after PAGASA declared the rainy season, until September 18, 2025),” the agency said in its advisory.
Despite widespread rains and flooding in recent weeks, the DOH noted that only two new cases were detected between Sept. 14 and 18.
The health department noted that the tally is still lower compared to the 1,199 cases logged during the week of August 3 to 9, which followed the onslaught of typhoons Crising, Dante, and Emong.
DOH said it has placed its central and regional offices on heightened alert due to the expected effects of “Nando” and its trough.
The DOH Central Office and its regional offices are on alert due to the expected impact of Typhoon Nando and its trough, particularly in extreme Northern, Central, and Southern Luzon, including Metro Manila and parts of the Visayas),” the agency said.
Also, the health department called on individuals exposed to floods or mud to seek immediate medical attention.
If exposed to floodwaters or mud, immediately consult DOH hospitals’ leptospirosis fast lanes or the nearest health center to assess risk level and receive the necessary treatment),” it said.
