UST rolls out red carpet for UAAP Season 88 grand opening

Set at 6 p.m., the host school, UST, opens its doors for a celebration rooted in tradition but elevated by innovation.
Inspired by the current Jubilee Year of Hope, the festivities take on a deeper meaning as these unite faith, the Thomasian culture, and artistic and athletic excellence.
With the theme “Strength in Motion, Hope in Action”, the grand ceremonies will feature dynamic and impassioned performances, and various ceremonial features from Thomasian culture.
True to UST’s Catholic identity, a Eucharistic Celebration led by the Prior Provincial of the Dominican Province of the Philippines, Rev. Fr. Filemon I. Dela Cruz, O.P., SThL, will start the opening festivities at 2 p.m. at the Quadricentennial Pavilion.
An opening performance will energize the crowd before athletes of all eight UAAP schools are welcomed to the campus by entering through the Arch of the Centuries, the original gateway of UST from the 1600s when it was still operating within Intramuros.
Two hundred athlete representatives from each school will walk through amid the resounding echoes of their official university cheers and converge at the UST Grandstand.
The Main Building, Arch of the Centuries, the Central Seminary, and the Grandstand/Open Field are all National Cultural Treasures as declared by the National Museum of the Philippines, and are utilized in the program to further share Thomasian traditions with fellow UAAP schools.
Once athletes and participants are all gathered at the Grandstand, the UAAP Season 88 Chairman of the Board of Trustees and Rector of the University of Santo Tomas Very Rev. Fr. Richard G. Ang, O.P., Ph.D., is set to deliver an inspirational message.
All eyes will turn to the lighting of the cauldron, which will then be followed by the opening declaration of UAAP Season 88.
A live performance of the UAAP Season 88 Theme Song, “Strength in Motion, Hope in Action” will be presented.
Also taking the stage are OPM artists who will perform for the Hope Concert at 8 p.m.
With the theme “Strength in Motion, Hope in Action”, Season 88 promises not only fierce competition among the country’s top university athletes, but also a celebration of boundless courage, enduring discipline, and the uniting spirit of sportsmanship.
Games and other proceedings within Season 88 will be available for viewing through the official partner CignalTV and its UAAP Varsity Channel, beginning with the FEU-Ateneo men’s basketball match on September 20 at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.
