Former Ilocos Sur representative and governor Chavit Singson wants an investigation done on the flood control projects within President Marcos’ own turf, Ilocos Norte, where the Discayas reportedly secured many contracts.
No longer holding public office, Chavit on Friday, Sep. 19, held a press conference to express his dismay with the government’s probe into the controversy.
Chavit was Marcos’ political ally until they had a falling out when the President allegedly refused him a position in government
Although he commended the composition of the newly-established Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI), Chavit did not seem to be satisfied with the Senate’s own probe on the corruption scandal.
He says the Senate inquiry is becoming “a circus".
“Parang paikot ikot lng tayo eh. Dapat ‘yung unang imbestigahin, flood control, unahin natin sa Region 1, Ilocos Norte (They're making fools out of us. The investigation should focus on flood control, and let’s start with Region 1, Ilocos Norte),” he said.
Singson, a business magnate whose relatives are also contractors, cited a report that many flood control projects in Ilocos Norte were won by companies of the controversial Curlee and Sarah Discaya couple.
“Panahon na ni President BBM. 10 billion. At ito pinaguusapan mga flood control, sino itong binibintangan, Discaya ang gumawa? (There are P10-billion flood control projects in Ilocos Norte under the time of Marcos. Who were contracted for the projects? The Discayas),” he said.
“Ang contractor nila sa Ilocos Norte, Discaya din eh. Paano tayo maniniwala ngayon sa pinagsasabi nila (Their contractor in Ilocos Norte are also Discayas. So why should we believe in what the government is saying)?” he added.
Singson then challenged the ICI, whom he was composed of “good people,” to start with investigating Ilocos Norte.
“Hinahamon ko sila, unahin na nila yun, wag na sila lumayo pa (I challenge the ICI to start with Ilocos Norte. You need not go far),” he said.
Singson also criticized Marcos for not being able to stop corruption as soon as he assumed the Palace seat.
“Noong siya umupo, dapat hininto niya na, kung may delicaceza siya (He should’ve stopped the corruption if he had delicadeza)” he said.
He added that Marcos should have also known what washappening even in the lowest level of the government, since he was the President.
