BACOLOD CITY - The Police Regional Office-Negros Island Region is on full alert for protests during the martial law anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 21, in the region.
A total of 1,120 police personnel were deployed in Negros Occidental, this highly-urbanized city, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor.
Police Lt. Col. Joem Malong, PRO-NIR spokesperson, said policemen are stationed for mobile and foot patrols, traffic control, Civil Disturbance Management (CDM), rapid response support, and drone surveillance.
Police Brig. Gen. Arnold Thomas Ibay, PRO-NIR Director, affirmed their commitment to uphold the right to peaceful assembly. He warned that any attempt to incite violence or commit illegal acts will be addressed firmly and lawfully.
“The right to peaceful assembly is a fundamental pillar of our democracy, one that we fully recognize and are sworn to protect,” Ibay said.
Police are coordinating with local governments, transport groups, and stakeholders to manage the impact of demonstrations and potential transport strikes.
Ibay said they are fully committed to striking this balance, and called on all participants to exercise their freedoms with responsibility and respect.
“As always, we will remain vigilant, fair, and ready to protect our communities, preserve peace, and defend the rule of law,” he said.
