CEBU CITY – Two boxers eager to climb up the rankings clash as the 22nd installment of the “Kumong Bol-Anon 22” fires on Saturday night, Sept. 20, in Tagbilaran City, Bohol.
PMI Bohol Boxing Stable’s Shane “Sugar Shane” Gentallan and Arvin John Sampaga of Masbate will fight for the vacant International Boxing Federation (IBF) Asia junior flyweight title with both fighters seeking a crucial victory that will certainly boost their world title aspirations.
“I am very motivated for this fight. This is one way of improving my rankings. This is a title fight and I will do my best to win this,” Gentallan said after the weigh-in for the 10-round fight on Friday, Sept. 18.
Gentallan weighed 107.3 pounds while Sampaga tipped the scales at 107.7.
He may be fighting in Gentallan’s territory but Sampaga is determined to go home a champion.
“I’ll do my best to win the championship belt,” said Sampaga.
Holding a 12W-1-L, 7KOs record, the 24-year-old Gentallan has just climbed to No. 11 in the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia mini flyweight rankings. He is on a five-fight winning streak, putting up a string of wins after losing to China’s DianXing Zhu in 2023.
Sampaga, on the other hand, has eight wins, two losses, and a loss. He is coming off a unanimous decision loss to Roderick Bautista last December.
Lawyer-sportsman Floriezyl Echavez-Podot, chief of PMI Bohol Boxing Promotions, said the card is a collaboration of three boxing outfits.
Podot said the PMI Boxing Stable has teamed up with Cebu-based Big Yellow Boxing Promotions and Butlig Boxing Gym to come up with a stacked card.
“In terms of collaboration, we are always open. They send their best fighters so this is going to be exciting,” Podot said.
In the co-main event, PMI’s unbeaten prospect Richard Laspoña (8-0, 5KOs) will face former world title challenger Robert Paradero (19-11-2, 13KOs) in a 10-round flyweight duel.
Big Yellow’s own undefeated fighter Arlando Senoc (6-0, 5KOs) will trade leathers with Roldan Sasan (8-7-1, 3KOs).
Also seeing action are PMI fighters Datu Adam, Freshler Utrera, and Jericho Acaylar, who will go up against Jelo Bacalso, Kasty Flores, and Joseph Lanat, respectively.
Butlig Boxing Stable’s Malinao brothers, Jake and Jed, will tangle with Sunny Boy Sinaon and Marvin Zamora, respectively.
