Newly-installed House Speaker Faustino "Bojie" Dy must show his independence and prove his critics wrong.
Thus, said Deputy Minority Leader and Akbayan Party-list Rep. Perci Cendaña on Friday, Sept. 19, or just two days after Dy ascended to the top post in the rostrum.
"The challenge is for the new Speaker to prove his critics wrong and to show his political will when it comes to pushing for systemic reforms within the House, and that will continue yung ating efforts to hold those responsible for plunder accountable," Cendaña said.
Dy is a member of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), a coalition partner of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) party under the Marcos administration. The previous Speaker, Leyte 1st district Rep, Martin Romualdez, is president of Lakas-CMD.
Upon his assumption of the Speakership last Wednesday, Sept. 17, critics pictured the Isabela 6th district congressman as nothing but another President Marcos lackey.
For Cendaña, the burden lies with Dy to show that these claims are wrong.
“It’s for the new Speaker to exercise and show independence from the previous leadership and at the same time, for the new Speaker to embrace the reforms na matagal na nating panawagan (that we have long called for)," said the minority member.
The House leadership shake-up happened amid the implication of several lawmakers--both House members and senators--in the flood control projects corruption scandal.
Cendaña hopes that Dy would prioritize the passage of a measure that would provide more power to the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) that was created by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to investigate anomalous or "ghost" flood mitigation projects.
