As Tropical Storm "Nando" (international name: Ragasa) threatens to intensify into a super typhoon by weekend, the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) prepared more than 2.6 million prepositioned family food packs (FFPs) for immediate distribution to affected communities.
On Friday, Sept. 19, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned that “Nando” may intensify into a super typhoon before making landfall. The agency urged the public to prepare early, noting that while “Nando” has no direct impact yet, southwest monsoon ot “habagat” rains will bring showers in several areas.
Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao, the spokesperson and head of the DSWD’s Disaster Response Management Group (DRMG), said these food packs and non-food items have been strategically stored in hubs, spokes, and last-mile areas to ensure their quick distribution to would-be affected communities.
“Our goal is to make sure that assistance reaches the people at the soonest possible time. Prepositioning these resources allows us to respond without delay. Maagap at mapagkalingang serbisyo ang kailangan sa ganitong panahon dahil gusto po ng ating pangulo na walang magugutom tuwing may kalamidad (Prompt and compassionate service is needed during times like this because the President wants no one to go hungry during calamities),” Dumlao said in a statement on Friday, Sept. 19.
The DSWD, she added, has placed all its field offices (FOs) nationwide on full alert, with LGUs tapped to coordinate with regional offices for augmentation requests once the storm hits.
“Local government units have also been tapped to coordinate with our DSWD FOs for possible augmentation requests,” she stated.
At the same time, Dumlao said the agency is still distributing relief assistance to families affected by Tropical Depression (TD) Mirasol, which has already exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR).
Based on the Sept. 19 Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center (DROMIC) report, over P2.27 million worth of food packs and non-food items have been distributed to residents in Regions 1 (Ilocos), 2 (Cagayan Valley), 3 (Central Luzon), 5 (Bicol), 6 (Western Visayas), and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).
“Patuloy po ang pamimigay natin ng mga relief assistance sa ating mga kababayan na nasa loob ng evacuation centers at mga lubhang tinamaan ng bagyo (We continue the distribution of relief assistance to our kababayans inside evacuation centers and those severely affected by the typhoon),” Dumlao said.
