In an interview in Davao City on Thursday, Sept. 18, the Vice President refused to give her reaction to Romualdez’s decision to step down from the House speakership position, but criticized the President for allowing lawmakers “to evade accountability” by letting them step down from power or leave for abroad.
“So yung pagpapalit nila ng speaker dyan ay para lang yan masabi ng mga tao na meron silang ginawa sa House of Representatives sa reklamo at sa galit ng mga tao. Pero ang totoo niyan ay sila lang din yan (The change in speaker is simply for show that they’re doing something at the House of Representatives amid public outcry. But the truth is, they’re from the same group),” she said.
“Grupo lang din yan ni Martin Romualdez, ni Sandro Marcos, and of course, siyempre, papunta na rin yan kay BBM (They’re from the same group as Martin Romualdez, Sandro Marcos, and of course, it all points to BBM),” the official added, pointing to the presidential cousin and son as the ones behind the House shakeup.
She argued that she knows firsthand Dy is a close friend of the former speaker through Isabela Governor Rodito Albano and Isabela Rep. Tonypet Albano.
“So sila lang din yun, sila-sila lang din yan, at sila-sila lang din nag-usap kung ano ang gagawin nila, at sila-sila lang din ang nagplano kung anong gagawin nila sa 2026 budget (So, they’re all the same, and they’re the same ones planning what to do with the 2026 budget),” Duterte claimed, adding that these moves are in preparation for the 2028 presidential elections.
Romualdez stepped down from the speakership position on Wednesday after allegedly being linked to the anomalous flood control scandal as twin investigations at the Senate and the House of Representatives are underway.
The lawmaker said it was to allow transparency and full accountability. He was replaced by Dy, who is reportedly affiliated with the President’s Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP).
