PBBM vows continued aid for Happyland fire victims

President Marcos assured displaced families in Tondo, Manila, of sustained government assistance as they recover from a massive fire that razed more than a thousand homes over the weekend.
Marcos said this as he visited on Thursday, Sept. 18, General Vicente Lim Elementary School, which now shelters thousands of residents affected by the blaze that displaced 2,184 families in the Happyland community on Saturday, Sept. 13.
The President personally oversaw the distribution of P15,000 in cash assistance for each affected family, alongside relief goods provided by the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).
“Ginagawa po namin ‘yan dahil, siyempre lahat kailangan ng pagkain, lahat kailangan ng gamot, lahat kailangan ng masisilungan (We are doing this because of course everyone needs food, everyone needs medicine, everyone needs shelter),” he said.
Marcos said cash aid is meant to give families flexibility in addressing their most urgent requirements.
“Ngunit hindi lahat ng pamilya ay pareho ang pangangailangan… Kaya nagbibigay ng cash para meron kayong gagamitin sa sarili niyong pangangailangan para sa pag-unlad ninyo (But not all families have the same needs… that’s why we are giving cash so you can use it for your own needs and progress),” he added.
Marcos said the government will continue supporting residents beyond the immediate relief stage.
“Pagkatapos po nito … at pwede na kayong bumalik sa inyong mga tahanan ay gagawin natin ay titingnan po natin kung paano makatulong yung pamahalaan para sa pagpatayo ng bahay (After this, when you are able to return to your homes, we will see how the government can help in rebuilding houses),” he said.
He also reminded residents to remain cautious as they recover.
“Ingat-ingat lang po. Kahit anong mangyari… titiyakin namin aalagaan namin kayo (Take care. Whatever happens, we will make sure to take care of you),” he added.
The DSWD also distributed 2,235 food packs, hygiene and sleeping kits, and prepared 2,000 hot meals through its mobile kitchen.
