President Marcos has joined volunteers in serving meals for Filipinos experiencing involuntary hunger at the Walang Gutom Kitchen in Pasay City.
Marcos made a visit to the Walang Gutom (No Hunger) Kitchen —the country’s first public and private food bank collaboration or soup kitchen—on Thursday morning, Sept. 18.
He joined Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Secretary Rex Gatchalian and volunteers in serving meals for Filipinos in need.
While serving meals, the President was seen interacting with beneficiaries, who are mostly individuals and families living in the streets. He also joined them in eating later.
The President also received a birthday cake for his 68th birthday from the DSWD. Beneficiaries and volunteers then sang him a happy birthday during their meal.
According to Gatchalian, Marcos visited the Walang Gutom Kitchen to check the operations of the food bank.
He added that the President wants the DSWD to open more food bank-soup kitchens around the country to combat hunger.
The DSWD launched the Walang Gutom Kitchen in December last year. It intends to feed 600 beneficiaries daily.
It is an initiative that aims to fight hunger and malnutrition among the country’s most vulnerable populations.
It functions as a community hub offering nutritious meals, hygiene facilities, medical care, and laundry services to individuals and families living in the streets, especially those reached through the DSWD’s Pag-Abot Program.
As of Sept. 17, the program has served a total of 152,959 meals and benefited a total of 108, 552 individuals. Aside from providing meals and other necessities to beneficiaries, the program also aims to address food wastage as the food bank receives donations from private partners in the food industry and private citizens.
