LTFRB: Strike fails to cripple public transport; PNP says it's generally peaceful

The first day of the nationwide transport strike failed to cripple the public transportation in Metro Manila and other parts of the country, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB).
At the same time, the Philippine National Police (PNP) said it did not monitor any serious incident that threatened or affected peace and order situation in strike sites across the country.
LTFRB chairman Teofilo Guadiz III said the strike only had minimal disruption that was addressed by the deployment of augmentation vehicles.
“Deployment of augmentation vehicles, close monitoring of traffic chokepoints, and swift response teams were all part of the contingency plan,” said Guadiz.
“Our duty is to the riding public. Strikes must never paralyze the lives of ordinary Filipinos,” he added.
For his part, PNP chief Lt. Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said the police organization has not monitored any serious threats amid the conduct of the transport strike.
‘’The first day of the three-day transport strike was generally orderly and peaceful. The police force has not monitored any untoward incident,” said Nartatez.
He attributed what he described as peaceful protest to the cooperation between the rallyists and the law enforcers.
‘We attribute this orderly conduct of the transport strike to the close coordination and cooperation among transport groups, law enforcement agencies, and other government offices,’’ said Nartatez.
“The PNP will continue to monitor the transport strike and provide assistance to commuters who will be affected,” he added.
The transport strikes stemmed from the outrage against alleged corruption in flood control projects.
