The Department of Education (DepEd) has expressed grief over the tragic death of Atty. Joshua L. Abrina, former Legal Officer of DepEd Palawan, and strongly condemned the attack that led to his killing.
In a statement released by the Central Office on Thursday, September 18, DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara extended condolences to Abrina’s family and colleagues, highlighting his integrity, dedication, and unwavering commitment to protecting learners’ rights and strengthening the department’s legal foundations.
“We honor his service, his integrity, and his unwavering commitment to protecting learners’ rights and strengthening the Department’s legal foundations,” Angara said.
DepEd denounced the killing, calling it a “senseless act of violence” that undermines justice and public service.
“We condemn in the strongest possible terms this senseless act of violence against a member of our institution and the legal profession,” Angara stressed.
The agency emphasized that such attacks not only cause pain to families and colleagues but also threaten the principles of the legal profession. “Such attacks not only cause deep grief to families and colleagues but also strike at the very principles of justice and public service,” Angara added.
Meanwhile, DepEd assured the public of its full cooperation with law enforcement agencies, including the Philippine National Police (PNP) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), in investigating the crime.
The department also appealed to the Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) and other institutions to extend their support and expertise to ensure justice is delivered swiftly.
DepEd further underscored the need to protect Abrina’s family and potential witnesses from intimidation. “We are resolute in our call that those responsible be held accountable and that justice be served swiftly,” Angara said.
As DepEd extends its deepest condolences to Abrina’s family, it also emphasized that his legacy of service and dedication to education will continue to inspire the department’s mission to create a safe, just, and compassionate learning environment for all Filipino learners.
“His dedication to education and the rule of law will continue to inspire our mission of ensuring that every Filipino learner is nurtured in a safe, just, and compassionate environment,” Angara added.
