Apple rolls out its latest line of phones, the base model iPhone 17, the iPhone 17 Pro, and the iPhone 17 Pro Max. While the devices’ specs and features were all announced at las week’s launch event, now everyone can get their hands on them.
The base model features Apple’s A19 chip, while the Pro and Pro Max models have the A19 Pro. While we will still have to test how powerful these chips really are, one thing to note is that even with the base model these should have more than enough to run most of the apps we already rely on. Based on the Apple website, the base model is supposed to have a 40% faster CPU and an 80% faster 5-core GPU than the iPhone 15 I’m currently using. Meanwhile the Pro chip will is 40% faster with a 6-core CPU and up to 2x faster 6-core GPU.
You can imagine running not just games but editing photos and videos, and other potentially demanding processes simultaneously. With such power needs great cooling, and to that end the pro models have a new feature, the Vapor Chamber Cooling System. According to Apple, “The new internal architecture features and Apple-designed vapor chamber to enhance dissipation and performance. Deionized water is sealed inside the vapor chamber, which is laser-welded into the aluminum chassis to move heat away from the powerful A19 Pro, allowing it to operate at higher performance levels.”
This shows Apple at its best connecting engineering with user experience. Another feature does that with taking photos. But it’s not necessarily just the cameras that make it interesting. All three models feature 48MP rear cameras and 18MP front cameras. As is par for the course here, you can expect to capture great photos with the hardware.
Possibly more interesting and fresh is the square sensor. It’ll sound like a simple thing, but it shows Apple having a sense for how people use phones. You can hold your phone upright and take a selfie, and you get a landscape image. No need to rotate your phone, no need to hold it on its side and figure out how to hold and take press the button and it slipping out of your hand. Again, seems small and simple, but an elegant solution to a problem we’ve all just adjusted to.
What’s been most intriguing to me is the iPhone Air. I’ve been impressed by other thin phones coming out lately, but this is 2mm thinner than even those. On a ruler, that’s not much, but according to videos, images, and reviews, this is supposed to be a very interesting form factor.
It has the same processor as the iPhone 17, but only a single camera lens on the back, as well as the 18MP front cam. The question many have is the battery life, given how little space there physically is on the entirety of the phone. But if nothing else, the iPhone Air is an incredibly interesting phone.
The iPhone 17 and its pro versions represent a significant upgrade in power and features. The real question is, is it time to place an order?
If you want a Cosmic Orange, rush to order now, as this color will probably run out quick. If you upgrade every year and there’s a color you’re after, go for it.
If it’s been a while since you picked up an iPhone and you’re feeling it’s time for an upgrade, this is a good a time as any. And if you’re curious, want a statement piece, or just want to feel something on the bleeding edge, then the iPhone Air should pique interest (and likely a credit card swipe). The iPhone 17 starts at P59,990. The iPhone 17 Pro starts at P79,990, the iPhone 17 Pro Max starts at P86,990, and the iPhone Air starts at P72,990.
