Majority Leader Ilocos Norte 1st district Rep. Sandro Marcos didn't take the much older Davao City 1st district Rep. Paolo Duterte's tirades on the House leadership change sitting down.
In a chance interview Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 17, Rep. Marcos was told about Rep. Duterte’s allegation that he was the one who handpicked Isabela 6th district Rep. Faustino "Bojie" Dy as Leyte 1st district Rep. Martin Romualdez's successor to the House Speakership.
The 50-year-old Rep. Duterte pointed out that the presidential son and Dy were party-mates at Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP). He further claimed that the whole leadership switch was a mere "cover-up move".
“Naku, ma'am baka style niya yun nung anak siya ng Pangulo (Oh ma'am, maybe that was his style when he was the son of President)," Rep. Marcos, 31, said of Rep. Duterte.
The Davao solon is the son of former president Rodrigo Duterte.
"I can assure you that me, we are consultative with all the party leaders. Pwede mo silang tanungin (You can ask them), we met for plenty of weeks," the majority leader said regarding Dy's selection for the chamber's top post.
"Kung nagpakita sana si Cong Pulong dito sa trabaho at sa session, makikita din niya (Had Cong Pulong appeared here for work and the session, he would see that too),” Marcos said in another jab.
“But I’m sure he's busy looking for the P51 billion that was spent on his district,” he said in another zinger.
Rep. Marcos was alluding to the P51 billion worth of projects allocated for Rep. Duterte’s district from 2020 to 2022--the latter half of his father's presidency.
Romualdez resigned as Speaker during plenary session Wednesday amid the flood control projects controversy.
"Kinausap at tinanong po namin ang mga party leaders kung sino tingin nila ang pwedeng maging kapalit ni Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez at ang pangalan na lumabas lagi ay si Cong. Bojie Dy,” Rep. Marcos said.
(We spoke with and asked the party leaders who they thought could replace Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, and the name that consistently came up was Cong. Bojie Dy.)
“We are a collegial body, the Speaker is primus inter pares, and he serves at the pleasure of the majority. So nung lumabas po ang pangalan ni Cong. Bojie Dy, yan po ang na-nominate bilang Speaker of the House,” Marcos added.
(When Cong. Bojie Dy's name came out, he was the one nominated as Speaker of the House.)
Dy ran unopposed as no one else was nominated for the chamber's top post. He ended up with 253 "yes" votes, more than enough to seal the Speakership.
