According to Olivarez, the largest Kadiwa Market, dubbed as the “Baclaran Gateway Market,” occupying a permanent space, will provide support to at least 2,000 to 3,000 vendors who are at risk of paying penalties for illegally occupying or using the sidewalk intended for pedestrians in Barangay Baclaran.
"Ngayon po, ang ginagawa lang po natin, control with order. Hindi naman pwede nating alisin ang hanap-buhay sa kanila at libo-libo ang umaasa po rito. Pero, with order (lang). Meron tayong kapulisan, meron tayong task force, na mag-aasikaso po rito para maayos po, pati po yung ating mga visitors, local and foreign, na pupunta po doon po sa ating Our National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help," Olivarez said. (What we are doing now is simply maintaining control with order. We cannot take away their livelihood since thousands depend on it. But it must be in order. We have the police and a task force managing the situation so that everything is organized, including for our visitors, both local and foreign, who come to our National Shrine of Our Mother of Perpetual Help.)
He added that the new location of the 10,000-square-meter trade center, beside the LRT 1 Redemptorist-Aseana Station, will be more accessible to consumers, given its proximity to economic and transportation hubs, and will likely attract more investors.
The mayor said the Kadiwa Market in the city has already been in place for a long time through the effort of the City Welfare Office in bringing all the basic goods closer to all 16 barangays in the city, especially the produce from the provinces.
Olivarez also assured that the Kadiwa Market will also help control the prices of goods and ensure that fresh produce can be delivered to every household in the city.
