The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) raised Signal No. 1 in 15 areas on Tuesday, September 16, as Tropical Depression Mirasol steadily moved westward --- approaching the Isabela-Aurora area.
In its 11 p.m. tropical cyclone bulletin, PAGASA said “Mirasol” is moving westward toward the Isabela-Aurora area --- with the potential to intensify into a tropical storm once it re-emerges over the Luzon Strait.
As of 10 p.m., PAGASA reported that the center of “Mirasol” was 95 km east of Baler, Aurora, or 65 km southeast of Casiguran, Aurora.
“Mirasol” has maximum sustained winds of 55 km/h, gusts of up to 70 km/h, and a central pressure of 1006 hPa, moving westward at 20 km/h.
Strong winds extend up to 200 km from the center, PAGASA added.
Areas under Signal No. 1
PAGASA has raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) No. 1 for several parts of Luzon, including:
- Batanes
- Cagayan (including Babuyan Islands)
- Isabela
- Quirino
- Northern and eastern portions of Nueva Vizcaya (Diadi, Quezon, Kasibu, Dupax del Norte, Bambang, Ambaguio, Bayombong, Solano, Villaverde, Bagabag, Alfonso Castañeda, Dupax del Sur)
- Northern and central portions of Aurora (Dilasag, Casiguran, Dinalungan, Dipaculao, Baler, Maria Aurora, San Luis)
- Apayao
- Abra
- Kalinga
- Mountain Province
- Ifugao
- Ilocos Norte
- Northern portion of Ilocos Sur (Sinait, Cabugao, San Juan, Magsingal, Santo Domingo, Bantay, San Vicente, San Ildefonso, Santa Catalina, City of Vigan, Caoayan, Santa)
- Polillo Islands
- Northern portion of Camarines Norte (Capalonga, Jose Panganiban, Paracale, Vinzons)
Signal No. 1 indicates a strong wind threat with a warning lead time of 36 hours.
PAGASA noted that expected wind speeds range from 39 to 61 km/h, posing a minimal to minor threat to life and property.
Heavy rainfall and coastal hazards
PAGASA said heavy rains are also expected across affected areas, with local flooding possible in low-lying and upland regions.
Coastal waters will experience moderate seas of up to 2.5 meters, particularly off the coasts of Cagayan, Babuyan Islands, Batanes, Isabela, Aurora, and northern Ilocos Norte.
PAGASA urged mariners, especially operators of small boats, to exercise caution or avoid venturing out to sea.
Forecast and intensification
“Mirasol” is forecast to move north-northwestward, with possible landfall in Isabela or northern Aurora by Wednesday morning, September 17, according to PAGASA.
Even if landfall does not occur, PAGASA said the tropical depression is expected to cross northern Luzon, potentially maintaining its strength or slightly weakening before re-entering the Luzon Strait, where it could intensify into a tropical storm by Thursday morning, September 18.
Outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), PAGASA said “Mirasol” may reach severe tropical storm strength by Friday, September 19.
Impact of the ‘habagat’
PAGASA noted that the southwest monsoon (habagat) will also bring strong to gale-force gusts over southern Luzon, Panay, Palawan, Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and northern regions, including Ilocos, Pangasinan, and Bataan from September 17 to 19.
As it monitors “Mirasol,” PAGASA urged the public and disaster risk reduction offices to take all necessary precautions to protect life and property.
