CEBU CITY – Bohol now has a facility that addresses cardiovascular diseases, marking a significant milestone in the province’s pursuit of accessible and modern healthcare services.
The Gov. Celestino Gallares Multi-Specialty Medical Center (GCGMSMC) in Cortes, Bohol held its soft launching on Monday, Sept. 15.
The GCGMSMC is among the pioneering flagship hospitals established under the Specialty Centers Act of 2023 or Republic Act No. 11959 that seeks to build regional specialty centers across the country to bring advanced medical care closer to the people.
The facility is designed to serve as a heart and vascular center, addressing cardiovascular diseases that are one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in the Philippines.
Gov. Aris Aumentado underscored the significance of the occasion.
“After years of waiting, Boholanos will now get a glimpse of modern healthcare excellence as one of Visayas’ largest medical facilities is set to partially open its doors today,” Aumentado said.
Aumentado assured that the provincial government fully supports the operations of the GCGMSMC and is committed to ensuring its success as it starts serving the public.
The facility is also equipped with specialized units for lung and kidney transplants as well as cancer care, ensuring early detection, timely intervention, and advanced treatment within the province.
According to medical center chief Dr. Laurence Tirol, the hospital’s design was guided by three principles: Clinical excellence, infection control, and environmental sustainability.
The facilities follow international standards set by the US Facilities Guidelines Institute to ensure world-class medical spaces.
Learning from the pandemic, the hospital integrated advanced infection control features such as specialized air ducts, vestibules, and rooms with capsular flow and pressure differences.
At the same time, it incorporates environmentally friendly systems such as rainwater harvesting, low-energy glass, and solar power to promote efficiency and sustainability.
Department of Health Undersecretary Dr. Mary Ann Maestral described the soft opening as a reason to be hopeful and proud, noting that the facility represents quality and accessible healthcare for every Filipino.
She said the hospital is the fulfillment of a long-shared vision to bring specialized healthcare closer to the communities.
Bohol Rep. John Geesnell Yap lauded the launching, calling it a symbol of shared dreams and collective determination to uplift the health and well-being of the people.
