Manila makes history with first-ever free angiogram at Ospital ng Maynila

The City Government of Manila successfully performed its first-ever free angiogram at the Ospital ng Maynila Medical Center on Monday, marking a significant step in making advanced cardiac care accessible to all Manileños.
The groundbreaking procedure was carried out at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 15, at the newly inaugurated Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab), a first-of-its-kind facility operated by a local government unit in Metro Manila.
Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno" Domagoso celebrated the historic medical milestone, expressing gratitude to the Cath Lab team led by Dr. Grace Padilla, Officer-in-Charge of the City Health Office.
“Salamat sa Diyos (Thank God),” Domagoso said in a statement, as he commended the dedication of the city's interventional cardiologists and medical staff who performed the life-saving procedure.
The medical team was composed of cardiologists Dr. Camilo Oliver Aquino, Dr. Wilfred Dee, Dr. Ian Bagauisan, Dr. Perry Jun Prieto, Dr. Jeremias Balgua Jr., and Dr. Oliver Nelson Zane.
They were supported by Cath Lab staff Veronica Imbag, Ruben Mendoza, Christian Macansantos, Ricky Matic, Crisel Nicolas, and Joannette de Vera.
A life-saving procedure for free
An angiogram is a critical diagnostic test that uses X-ray imaging to examine blood vessels and detect blockages in the heart.
In private hospitals, the procedure typically costs P58,000 or more, with potential follow-up treatments, such as angioplasty, costing upwards of P300,000.
For many low-income families, these life-saving diagnostics remain out of reach.
The successful angiogram at Ospital ng Maynila signals a shift in that narrative, bringing specialized cardiovascular care to the city’s most vulnerable patients at zero cost.
Building a heart-smart city
The procedure comes just a week after Domagoso formally opened the Ospital ng Maynila’s Cath Lab on September 8, following its licensing by the Department of Health (DOH) on January 7.
The facility is equipped with state-of-the-art imaging and diagnostic equipment used to assess and treat heart disease without the need for open surgery.
Domagoso emphasized that this is just the beginning.
“This facility will gradually roll out more advanced procedures, including angioplasty, to benefit our residents who suffer from cardiovascular diseases,” he said.
The Cath Lab is part of a broader strategy by the City Government to transform Manila into a hub for public healthcare excellence. This includes the ongoing construction of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila’s Academic Building for Health Sciences, designed to produce up to 5,000 new healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and allied health workers.
“Rest assured, despite limited resources, we will continue to invest in world-class facilities for our doctors and nurses,” Domagoso added.
With the launch of the city’s first Cath Lab and the administration’s continued investment in health infrastructure, the city officials took pride, saying that Manila is setting a powerful example for other local governments in democratizing access to life-saving healthcare.
