DLSU committee urges Lasallians to join Filipinos in demanding accountability over flood, corruption scandal

The De La Salle University (DLSU) Committee on National Issues and Concerns on Tuesday, Sept. 16, urged Lasallians nationwide to stand with the Filipino people in holding officials accountable for corruption and negligence that have worsened flooding across the country.
“We call on all Lasallians to stand with the Filipino people in demanding accountability against those who have failed in upholding their sworn duty, reform in institutions that have been eroded by corruption, and justice for the losses sustained due to greed and neglect,” the committee said in a statement.
The appeal came after weeks of “devastating floods that have ravaged our land, displaced Filipinos, and even proven to be fatal for some communities” — disasters the committee said were aggravated by “substandard and ghost flood control projects.”
“The DLSU Committee on National Issues and Concerns stands in solidarity with the Filipino people in condemning this brazen neglect of duty and demanding truth, accountability and justice,” it stressed.
The committee slammed the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) for approving incomplete flood projects, calling it a betrayal of public trust.
“Each signature is a death sentence written in ink. It is a deliberate choice to let communities drown while personal coffers fill,” it said.
As such, the committee criticized the lavish lifestyles of contractors, politicians, and bureaucrats in stark contrast to the misery of flood-stricken families, calling it “a cruel mockery of our people’s suffering, but undeniable proof of how deeply corruption festers.”
The statement pointed to what it called a “culture of impunity” embedded in governance. 
“When our leaders abandon accountability and institutions supposedly meant to protect public interest are weaponized for profit, disasters cease to be natural and become man-made crimes,” it said.
It urged vigilance as probes into flood control projects proceed, warning that “no one should be spared from accountability, no matter their position or privilege.”
“Let us not waver in our commitment to truth and justice, until corruption is confronted and governance truly serves the Filipino people,” the committee said.
