ILOILO CITY — A blackout hit Boracay Island over the weekend.
Power was restored on Monday afternoon.
The Department of Energy (DOE) said damaged underground cables at Caticlan Airport in mainland Malay town in Aklan province caused the power interruption from Sept. 13 to 15.
The Nabas-Unidos 69 kV transmission line connecting Aklan Electric Cooperative (AKELCO) and National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP) tripped as a result.
The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) allowed eight teams from AKELCO and NGCP to install an 800-meter temporary power transmission line along the airport’s perimeter.
DOE Secretary Sharon Garin assured that DOE teams are on site to coordinate with AKELCO and NGCP for the permanent repairs of underground cables.
The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) ordered the NGCP to complete its Nabas–Caticlan–Boracay Transmission Line Project and help strengthen power infrastructure in Boracay, the country’s most popular beach destination.
