Team Philippines delivered a silver medal in the 13th ASEAN Kendo Tournament in Singapore over the weekend.
The Nationals, composed of captain Paul Minoza, Robert Carabuena Jr., Steve Cañete, Jan-Raphael Chua, Jhan Alfred Timogtimog, Sebastian Jeane Bangoy and Aaron Penaco, landed second in the men's team event to surpass their bronze-medal finish last year.
“A big win for Philippine Kendo!” United Kendo Federation of the Philippines wrote on its social media post. “Congratulations to all our pinoy kendoka, this is truly a proud moment for Philippine Kendo!”
It was a fitting campaign for the Filipino bets as the 2028 edition of the triennial competition is set to be hosted by the country.
Host Singapore A copped the top honor, while Malaysia A and Singapore B shared third place in the three-day meet.
Meanwhile, the women’s squad fell short for a podium spot of the team division but member Melduen Castillon stood out after earning the Fighting Spirit Award.
Lyndi Mendoza also starred for the Philippines as she achieved the similar feat in the women's individual class.
Also donning the tricolors in the men’s side were Francis Jay Abordo, Jerome Bautista, Andre Brillantes, Joshua Espiritu, Yuta Inoue, Ralph Lee, and Michael Logarta, while in the distaff side, Loida Estanilla-Inting led the pack along with Xylia Alzate, Kristen Bulatao, Janelle Dacumos, Fides Desacada-Tatlonghari, Denise Gonzales, Arlene Maurillo, Geziel Patalinghug, Reida-Jade and Renoida-Jonah Renovilla, Phineline Villa-Abrille, and Suzzane Yu.
