House Senior Deputy Minority Leader Caloocan City 2nd district Rep. Edgar Erice believes that there’s no serious threat against the Speakership of Leyte 1st district Rep. Martin Romualdez.
Erice was asked about the Speakership issue on Monday, Sept. 15 during a press conference of the Liberal Party (LP) bloc and some minority solons in the House of Representatives.
"I don't think there's a serious challenge to Speaker Romualdez," Erice, a veteran legislator, told reporters.
"Chismis lang po siguro dahil wala po kaming narinig (Those are probably just rumors because we didn't hear about it)," he added when pressed about the somewhat recurring reports of an upheaval in the lower chamber.
But Erice made it clear that as members of the minority, any potential movement within the majority bloc has no bearing on them.
"We are in the minority, wala kaming pakialam sa majority (we don't care about the majority)," he said.
"Gusto nga namin maging majority kami eh (Actually we want to be in the majority bloc)," the Caloocan solon said tongue-in-cheek.
Erice further said: "Wala po, wala po[ng kumokontak] sa parte namin. Hindi po kami makikialam sa problema ng majority. Ang pinapakialaman po namin yung problema ng bayan."
(On our part, nobody, nobody has contacted us. We won't meddle with the problem of the majority. What we’re meddling with is the problem of the country.)
Erice was referring to the flood control projects corruption scandal, where several congressmen and senators have been implicated.
In line with this, Erice and his minority bloc colleagues filed House Bill (HB) No.4453, which called for the creation of an Independent Commission Against Infrastructure Corruption.
