President Marcos has commended the implementation of the "Tara, Basa" tutoring program, saying it is the "true essence of public service."
During the Tara, Basa! tutoring program national culminating activity at the University of Makati in Taguig City on Monday, Sept. 15, Marcos highlighted the significance of the program which not only assists learners in improving their reading skills but also provides financial support to college students and parents.
In the span of two years, more than 348,000 Filipinos in need have been reached by the program, he said.
"Isang programang tumutugon sa problema ng edukasyon at nagbigay kita sa mga college students at magulang, pinag-isipan at ipinatupad nang may malasakit at pagmamahal sa ating kapwa lalung-lalo na sa ating kabataan (A program that addresses the problem of education and provides income to college students and parents—carefully planned and implemented with compassion and love for our fellowmen, especially our youth)," Marcos said.
"Ito po ang diwa ng “Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program”. Ito ang tunay na diwa ng serbisyo publiko (This is the spirit of the ‘Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program.’ This is the true essence of public service)," he added.
According to the President, the Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program implemented by the Department of Social Welfare and Development's (DSWD) honed the skills of college students to become tutors and youth development workers to teach students who are struggling or non-readers.
It also assisted parents and guardians through the Nanay-Tatay sessions, which were supported by youth development workers.
Marcos also expressed gratitude to tutors and youth development workers for their work, and urged parents to continue supporting their children in their quest for knowledge.
“Sa ating mga mag-aaral, mga anak, nawa’y maging daan ang programang ito sa tuloy-tuloy ninyong pag-unlad (To our students, our children, may this program serve as a pathway to your continuous growth and development),” the President told students.
The Chief Executive also urged the DSWD and the Department of Education (DepEd) to strengthen the implementation of the program and ensure that it reaches and encourages more Filipinos.
