Malaysia celebrates 68th National Day with diplomatic reception

The Embassy of Malaysia hosted a commemorative reception at Shangri-La Makati on September 9 to mark Malaysia’s 68th National Day. The event celebrated Malaysia’s journey since independence and reaffirmed its commitment to regional leadership and bilateral friendship with the Philippines.
The reception was attended by a distinguished roster of guests, including Department of Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Leo M. Herrera-Lim for Migration Affairs as guest of honor, Apostolic Nuncio and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps Archbishop Charles John Brown, members of the Philippine Senate and Congress, senior government officials, diplomats, business leaders, and friends of Malaysia.

In his address, Dato’ Abdul Malik Melvin Castelino, Ambassador of Malaysia to the Philippines, reflected on Malaysia’s progress since 1957 and emphasized this year’s theme, “Malaysia MADANI: Rakyat Disantuni” (People Cared For), as a tribute to past sacrifices and a call to safeguard unity, peace, and prosperity.
Ambassador Malik highlighted Malaysia’s role as ASEAN chair in 2025, under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability.” He outlined key initiatives, including the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN 2045, the ASEAN Economic Community Strategic Plan 2026–2030, the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement, and expanded cooperation on climate action, public health, and Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN.

He also reaffirmed Malaysia’s support for the Philippines as it prepares to assume the ASEAN chairmanship in 2026, emphasizing the importance of continuity and collaboration in advancing ASEAN’s shared vision.
On bilateral relations, Ambassador Malik noted the enduring ties between Malaysia and the Philippines, rooted in shared history, culture, and aspirations. With over 800 Malaysian companies operating in the country, cooperation continues to thrive across trade, investment, Islamic banking, education, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges.
The evening featured cultural performances, an angklung presentation by the Sisters of Mary Schools, a video montage on Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship, and a culinary showcase by Malaysian chefs Edwin and Ammar. A symbolic CSR presentation of 1,000 boxes of fresh milk to the Philippine Department of Education underscored the Embassy’s commitment to community outreach.
The event concluded with a ceremonial cake-cutting, cultural dances, and a lucky draw, celebrating the enduring friendship between Malaysia and the Philippines.
