UP begins bid vs UST; La Salle, Ateneo battle separate foes in UAAP opener

University of the Philippines begins its bid for a title defense when it tangles with host University of Santo Tomas to kickstart the opening week of the UAAP Season 88 men’s basketball tournament at the Quadricentennial Pavilion Arena Sunday, Sept. 21.

The Fighting Maroons prepare for a big task ahead minus their former stars Francis Lopez and JD Cagulangan, with their first assignment against the host school set at 4:30 p.m.

University of the East, which has its new head coach in Chris Gavina, and the National University raise the curtain at 2 p.m. for the men’s basketball double-header.

Meanwhile, De La Salle University and Ateneo, which are rekindling their old rivalry on Oct. 5, try to steal the spotlight on the opening day on Saturday, Sept. 20.

Last year’s bridesmaids, the Green Archers take on a familiar foe in Adamson Soaring Falcons at 4:30 p.m. The two schools figured in the semis where the Mike Phillips-led Taft school prevailed.

The Blue Eagles, on the other hand, shoot for a statement win against the Veejay Pre-less Far Eastern University at 1 p.m.

Among the exciting games is the fierce matchup between La Salle and UP on Oct. 19, and the "Battle of Katipunan" between the State U and Ateneo on Oct. 8.

Women’s basketball, for its part, moved its schedule to Wednesday, Sept. 24, to give way for the players who participated in the FIBA 3x3 Under-23 World Cup.
