Season campaigners and rising stars take the lead as Team Philippines vies in the 13th ASEAN Kendo Tournament in Singapore slated Sept. 12 to 14.
Composed of 28 bets, the Nationals aim to impress in the three-day meet and surpass their bronze medal finish in the previous edition.
Paul Vincent Minoza is leading the men’s team together with Francis Jay Abordo, Jeanne Sebastian, Jerome Baustista, Andre Brillantes, Steven Canete, Robert Carabuena Jr., Jan-Raphael Chua, Joshua Espiritu, Yuta Inoue, Ralph Lee, Michael Logarta, Aaron Penaco and Jhan Timogtimog.
Loida Estanilla-Inting serves as a skipper for the women's side that also has Xylia Alzate, Kristen Bulatao, Melduen Castillon, Janelle Dacumos, Fides Desacada-Tatlonghari, Denise Gonzales, Arlene Maurillo, Lyndi Mendoza, Geziel Patalinghug, Reida-Jade and Renoida-Jonah Renovilla, Phineline Villa-Abrille, and Suzzane Yu.
They are competing in all four competitions: men and women individual as well as the team events for both categories. The tournament also features Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, and Myanmar.
United Kendo Federation of the Philippines (UKFP) president and accomplished kendo athletes Kristopher Inting is leading the delegation with coaches Tomoyuki Akita and Keitai Shingaki, and team managers Yuta Esaki and Masamichi Itoh.
“We wish the Philippine Kendo Team the best of luck as they carry the spirit, skill, and honor of Philippine Kendo onto the international stage,” UKFP wrote on its social media post. “Laban, Pilipinas! Kiai hanggang dulo!”
Last August, the Philippine Kendo Team stepped into their final Gasshuku (training camp) – a grueling two-day practice – to bolster their chances of winningin the regional tiff.
In the 12th edition held in Jakarta, Indonesia, the Philippine men’s team won a bronze, while the whole contingent received the “Fighting Spirit” award.
More than a year ago, the PH Kendo made a historic appearance in the 19th World Kendo Championship where it sent its first-ever squad to vie on the prestigious stage of the sport.
