Bacolod City Rep. Albee Benitez provided P2.3 million in financial assistance to more than 200 families affected by a fire in Barangay 27 on Friday, Sept. 12.
Benitez on Saturday, Sept. 13, turned over P10,000 each for 217 affected families, P5,000 for 26 renters, and P3,000 for 13 sharers.
Councilor Caesar Distrito, spokesperson of Benitez, said the money personally came from the lawmaker and aims to help them recover and meet their immediate needs.
“This is just the first step. Rebuilding lives and homes will take more time, but he will be with them every step of the way,” Distrito said.
Benitez vowed to seek further support from the national government and provide additional food assistance in the coming days.
He said the property ownership status in the affected area must be clarified, a key to determine how best to help families rebuild their homes with dignity.
“No Bacolodnon should feel alone after a tragedy like this. I will make sure that every family is given a fair chance to start again,” the lawmaker said.
He thanked barangay officials, city personnel, volunteers, and first responders for their quick action and compassion.
“This is a time for all of us to stand together. Together, we will help these families rise again,” he said.
Two-hundred thirty-four houses were destroyed and damage to property was placed at P4.5 million. The fire was allegedly due to an electrical ignition caused by arcing.
