The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will deploy the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to help investigate thousands of flood control projects flagged for irregularities.
DPWH Secretary Vince Dizon, in a television interview on Friday, Sept. 12, said the agency cannot manage the inspections on its own and will depend on the support of the police and military.
“Hihingi na rin po tayong ng tulong sa ating PNP pati na rin po sa ating Armed Forces para tulungan nila tayong mag-ikot at sumilip dito sa mga proyektong nire-report sa atin (We will also ask for the assistance of the PNP and the Armed Forces to help us visit and inspect the projects reported to us),” Dizon said.
A newly mobilized DPWH team will examine more than 100 reported anomalous projects nationwide, the secretary added.
Dizon also said he will personally join Baguio City Mayor Benjamin Magalong next week to inspect questionable projects in Baguio and La Union.
PNP public information office chief Police Brig. Gen. Randulf Tuaño said the police have yet to receive any formal request from the DPWH.
AFP public affairs office chief Col. Xerxes Trinidad, meanwhile, assured that the military is ready to respond once tapped.
The initiative follows President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s directive to investigate irregularities in flood control projects, prompting separate inquiries by government agencies, the Senate, and the House of Representatives.
