BACOLOD CITY – Negros Oriental third district Rep. Janice Degamo vowed to continue fighting for justice after a Manila court granted the bail petition of former Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr. in one of his murder cases.
“I will never stop fighting to make sure that justice is served no matter how long or difficult the process may be,” Degamo said in a statement.
In a 29-page order dated Sept. 10, the Manila Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 12 recommended a bail of P120,000 for Teves in connection with the murder of a bodyguard of a Basay, Negros Oriental mayoral candidate in May 2019.
“I know that this development has caused confusion and concern among many NegOrenses. Some might think that this means Teves is set to be released soon,” Degamo said.
She stressed that the bail order applies only to that case.
Degamo noted that Teves continues to face multiple other serious charges before different courts of law, including two other murder cases in 2019 involving killings in Negros Oriental, which remain pending in court, and the Pamplona massacre on March 4, 2023 where her husband, Gov. Roel Degamo, and nine civilians, were killed and several others were injured.
She added that Teves, along with others, is facing terrorism designation by the Anti-Terrorism Council due to a documented pattern of killings, harassment, and violent acts in the province spanning several years.
Degamo said that each of these cases is being tried separately, which involve different evidence, witnesses, and courts. "The fact that bail was granted in one case does not erase or diminish the very serious charges still pending against him," she added.
“I deeply understand the pain and frustration of the victims’ families, because I am one of them,” the lawmaker said, recalling how she lost her husband to a brutal and senseless act of violence.
“I share the grief of every family in Negros Oriental that has been torn apart by these crimes. Justice is not always swift, but we must trust that truth will prevail,” she said.
“The eyes of the nation are on Negros Oriental, and together, we will ensure that accountability is achieved and that violence never again becomes the language of politics in our province,” she added.
She assured the victims, their families, and the people of Negros Oriental that she stands firmly with them, and will continue to fight for justice, peace, and healing for all.
Despite the bail, Teves’ camp that he will remain in detention due to other pending charges.
Teves returned to the Philippines last May after he was arrested by immigration authorities in his residence in Timor-Leste.
